Lactation Consultant &
Perinatal Health Coach

Hi there, I am Lesleah.

Thanks for visiting. As an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) with over 16 years experience as a Midwife, I am extremely passionate about providing the breastfeeding care that mums of the Barossa deserve.

Birthmark Barossa provides a full range of services, including Lactation Consultation, Childbirth Education, Car Seat Installation, Infant CPR, Antenatal Education and more.

What is a Lactation Consultant?

Ideally, your Lactation Consultant, should be an ‘IBCLC’ ( ‘International Board Certified Lactation Consultant’) as it is the highest accredited professional that specialises in Lactation and all things breast or infant feeding. An IBCLC is an internationally recognised qualification and supported and recognised globally.

To be an IBCLC a person must have completed a specialised lactation training program, have hundreds of hours of clinical breastfeeding experience, and pass a very long and complex exam. To maintain this qualification, an IBCLC must uphold the code of conduct and ethics of the IBCLC, continue professional development and re-apply every 5 years by way of competency and/or recertification.

An IBCLC is the pinnacle expert in breastfeeding advice and support.

When should I see one?

Any time before or after the birth of your baby.

But most importantly, if you’re having trouble with any aspect of breastfeeding or feeding your baby in general.

The most common breastfeeding issues I see as an IBCLC is pain or latching difficulties, breastmilk supply issues (either low supply or oversupply), mastitis and breast or nipple pain/damage, to name just a few.

Breastfeeding should not hurt. It can take time for you and your baby to learn the skills involved in breastfeeding. If you are experiencing any pain, this is the time to seek professional help. You should not have any damage to your nipples such as blisters, grazes or bleeding.

Breastfeeding can be a beautiful, enjoyable experience, but it’s not always easy for every mum and baby, especially if there is pain. Pain means that there is something that isn’t quite right. Nipple damage means that something isn’t quite right. Getting help as soon as possible is important as nipple damage can lead to nipple and/or breast infections, low weight gains for babies, supply issues and assessing for any underlying issues that may be impacting successful breastfeeding.

I also commonly see clients when they are pregnant for an Antenatal Consultation. Like all things in life, but particularly when having a baby, being prepared is the key to achieving your breastfeeding goals. During pregnancy a lot of the focus is on the birth (understandably), however being prepared for breastfeeding is just as important – it is the best investment you can make.  It’s especially important if you are already worried about breastfeeding or have specific concerns, such as breastfeeding after breast surgery or have health conditions you think might impact your success at breastfeeding. Involving your partner in supporting your breastfeeding journey is also important.

As an IBCLC, I can also help you prepare and get ready to return to work. Returning to work can be very daunting and understandably cause lots of anxiety. Depending on your goals, I can either help you work out a feeding/expressing plan while you are away from your baby that will protect your supply. Whatever your goals are, whether they are short term or long term, we can discuss how to navigate this safely.

As you can see, there are many reasons to see an IBCLC, with the key message being – be prepared, get informed and get help sooner rather than later!
